SEX + ARCHITECTURE

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Impact of architecture in sexual experience

Professor Richard Williams says ‘If they’re routinely designing the buildings in which sex happens, then you might expect them to spend more time thinking about it.’

Indoor experiences and aesthetics are two of the primary concerns most of the architects consider while designing a habitat. Materialistic status or cost-effectiveness can be some needs their clients ask them for.

Good sex is a basic human need ( definitely an important one ) As mentioned by Esther Perel in 'Mating in Captivity' - 'Sex waste time, needs space and is inhibited by too much intimacy' - all have implication for architecture. If sex had this much regard in architecture then why do most architects think less about the sexual experience while designing?

Sex is a much-needed detail in architecture as societal attitudes towards sexuality and gender evolve substantially. Architecture must be sensitive to these changes and must respond to it with proposals. If architecture is a physical representation of society that makes it, then it is bound to be designed with not just a good bedroom but with more possibilities for exciting and passionate sex.

After an hour on google, I came up with a few possibilities in favor of our topic

LIGHTNING

Lighting is a tried and true way to set a sexy mood - candle lights, soft and warm indirect lighting. Fire is widely considered as a primal force of sexual passion in our ancient texts.

CRUISING FOR SEX INSIDE HOME

Embrace ideas of cruising and sex inside habitual space. Casual and anonymous sex in semi-public spaces are always exiting, maybe an interconnected floor plan.

EXOTIC & EROTIC

A free-flowing inside-outside building with open sleeping areas providing comfort and has a therapeutic role as well.

LINEARITY

Avoid too much linearity in the bedroom and add more rounds and curves in it. (no idea how it helps but seems legit.)

‘Right angles don’t attract me, nor straight, hard and inflexible lines created by man. What attracts me are free and sensual curves. The curves we find … in the body of the woman we love’. -  Oscar Niemeyer

Being a young architect and a virgin, clearly, I'm not an expert in postulating a theory or a practice on the topic. But being a modern citizen and an aspiring architect I'm obliged to explore and learn about the topic.

thank you
